REAL WEDDING
DEMI + JAMES
PHOTOGRAPHY | RHI MATTHEWS PHOTOGRAPHY
Ten years ago, at the tender age of 16, Demi and James crossed paths through a mutual friend, setting in motion a love story that has since blossomed into something truly remarkable. Their journey has seen them through high school, university, the purchase of a home, and numerous other significant milestones. In a world where change is constant, their enduring bond stands as a testament to the strength of their connection.
In April 2022, James decided to take their relationship to the next level with a heartfelt proposal. He chose the serene and secluded Wombat Hill Botanical Gardens in Daylesford as the backdrop for this pivotal moment, ensuring that Demi’s wish for an intimate proposal was granted. Following the ‘yes’ that changed their lives forever, the couple celebrated with cheese, bubbles and a flurry of phone calls to their nearest and dearest. It’s a moment that will forever be etched in their hearts as one of pure joy.
When it came to planning their wedding, Demi and James were determined to create a celebration that truly reflected their personalities. They envisioned a low-key yet beautiful affair filled to the brim with love. One of their key priorities was to support local small businesses, a testament to their appreciation for their community. Utilising resources like Geelong Wedding magazine and Instagram, they curated a dream team of local vendors. To keep their budget in check, they diligently tracked expenses using a spreadsheet — a wise move in a world of enticing wedding temptations.
Despite their desire for an intimate gathering, the couple faced the challenge of guest numbers due to James’ extensive family. Nevertheless, they managed to strike a balance and kept their wedding relatively small to ensure they could personally connect with each and every attendee — an essential element of their special day.
Demi’s journey of inspiration began on Pinterest, with ideas evolving as they went along. The colour scheme was influenced by a pistachio-coloured suit jacket James fell in love with at Eddy Elias Menswear, featuring shades of light green, timber and classic black and white. Demi, a lover of vibrant hues, infused more colour into their day through the choice of flowers, creating a beautiful contrast to the rustic backdrop of their venue.
James looked dashing in his jacket, while Demi opted for a simple yet timeless gown with unique touches like a leg slit, pockets and side cutouts. Her tulle bowtie shoes added a playful touch to her elegant ensemble.
As with any outdoor wedding, weather was a concern. However, just as Demi stepped out of her grandpa’s car to walk down the aisle, the clouds parted and the sun bathed the ceremony in its gentle warmth — an encouraging sign from the universe, making the moment all the more special.
When asked about their top priority for the day, Demi and James emphasised that they wanted everyone, themselves included, to have a blast. Their wedding was a day filled with love, laughter, food, drinks and dancing — and they couldn’t be more grateful for how it all came together.
Their advice to other couples planning their special day? Don’t sweat the small stuff. Cherish every moment, for this day marks the union of two souls in love. You deserve to revel in the joy and magic of it all.
