REAL WEDDING

HAYLEY + DAVID

PHOTOGRAPHY   |  JARRAH LYNCH

Hayley and David met through work, where David was a consultant. The project team thought they were a good match and introduced them – they were right, as Hayley and David hit it off straight away. Time flew by until the moment of the proposal, which happened in October 2017 on Phi Phi Island sitting by the pool and sipping cocktails.

Hayley and David wanted a relaxed celebration that captured who they were. There were a few setbacks over the years, including Covid, so the couple got to the point where they just dived in. So, in December 2022 they booked the venue and had three months to plan the wedding, and that was the best way to do it – the shorter planning timeframe meant they had to be organised and efficient. They were lucky that all their vendors were available and so helpful in the leadup.

Hayley and David’s 120-guest wedding was a daytime cocktail wedding, and the ceremony was on the rooftop of Sailor’s Rest at 11 am with the reception until 5:30, so the styling had to be complimentary to the schedule. The venue itself was stunning on its own and very light and bright, reminding of the deep colours of autumn.

Being a cocktail wedding, this was new for many of the family members, so it was important they were well fed.  Many of them came from Melbourne by bus, so the couple organised picnic boxes for the journey and a grazing table kicked off post ceremony, with canapes flowing all through day. All of their guests raved about the food.

Hayley and David are also big on music and had a mix of traditional Italian music and an acoustic duo playing throughout the day. The dance floor was full for most of the day, and even people outside on the grassy area adjacent to the venue were dancing!

In terms of outfits, Hayley did not have a specific style and just knew she wanted something a bit fun but still classy and elegant. Rachel Gilbert was always her first stop and she chose the dress within an hour – the first one she tried on.

Similar to Hayley, David wasn’t sure of the style or colour of his outfit. He asked a best friend to come with him for the day looking for suits. His advice was on point and the groom ended up with a white double-breasted jacket, black shirt, pants and loafers.

David being Italian background it was important they had many nods to his heritage – such as Italian music scattered throughout the day and a cannoli tower as their “wedding cake”.  Apart from ensuring their guests were well-fed, hydrated, and had a good time, there were many people that they wanted to recognise that are no longer with Hayley and David. They wanted to do something a little different, so for the ceremony they stood on a rug that belonged to David’s older sister Laura, had Laura’s son light a candle in honour of all that had passed and they named some cocktails after David’s mother and Hayley’s two grandmothers with a little description to capture their individual essence.

Hayley advises engaged couples to design the day that captures them as a couple. It will be more genuine and authentic, and your guests will love every minute. David adds you should take time out just the two of you – for instance they snuck off during photos for a Negroni. After the hectic morning, taking a moment to just chill out was really cool. Give yourselves time to soak in the atmosphere of the day!
