HILLEEN + MICHAEL
PHOTOGRAPHY | HEY JACK
Hilleen and Michael’s love story began in the digital age, with a swipe right on a dating app on January 23, 2020. Their first meeting at the Sporting Globe in Ballarat sparked an undeniable connection, leading to a relationship that quickly became inseparable.
Hilleen, originally from the Netherlands, had come to Australia as an Au Pair – despite planning to stay for only six months – meeting Michael changed her plans. The couple’s bond strengthened during the challenging COVID-19 lockdowns in Victoria, spending weekends together and growing closer. By December 2020, they had moved into a house Michael was building in Ballan. In August 2021, they relocated to the Netherlands where they lived for two years, despite some significant personal losses and joyous moments, including the birth of their daughter, Anna.
Michael proposed to Hilleen on October 15, 2022, in a heartfelt moment in the backyard of Hilleen’s grandmother’s house. The setting held sentimental value as it was close to Hilleen’s late grandfather. The proposal was followed by a celebratory evening at Hilleen’s favorite restaurant, marking a milestone in their journey.
The couple chose to have two weddings, starting with an intimate ceremony in the Netherlands on July 1, 2023. This small yet charming wedding took place by a lake near Hilleen’s hometown, attended by close family and friends. Despite the planning challenges, including venue setup on the wedding day itself, the event turned out beautifully, thanks to the couple’s efforts and support from loved ones.
For their Australian wedding, Hilleen and Michael selected Jack Rabbit Vineyard based on virtual tours and consultations while still in the Netherlands. Kate from Jack Rabbit made the planning process enjoyable and stress-free.
Hilleen meticulously curated a Pinterest board to envision her ideal wedding. She aspired for a simple and elegant celebration, ensuring the décor and arrangements remained understated. Her bold choice of a black and white theme initially raised eyebrows, especially from her mother, who associated the palette more with somber events. Despite this, Hilleen stayed true to her vision, embracing the monochromatic theme for her special day.
Hilleen wore the stunning Mesina gown from KYHA, a departure from her original princess-style dress worn in the Netherlands. Her bridesmaids donned elegant black dresses from Billy J, complimenting the wedding’s chic theme. Michael and his groomsmen looked dapper in black suits from WE Fashion Netherlands, complete with bow ties and plain white shirts. Michael’s watch, a treasured gift from his late mother, added a sentimental touch to his attire.
The couple’s first look took place at the Town Hall in Geelong, followed by a photoshoot at a nearby wine bar. This private moment allowed them to share some quiet time together before the celebrations began. A highlight of the day was announcing their exciting news – they were expecting their second child.
Michael’s primary wish was for Hilleen to remain relaxed and enjoy the day without stress. Thanks to Kate and her team, the wedding day was a smooth, joyous celebration. The reception turned into a lively party, with guests dancing the night away, fulfilling the couple’s wish for a memorable and joyous occasion.
