REAL WEDDING
MAT + ALEX
PHOTOGRAPHY | PETER FOSTER
Fate and the right amount of bling led to Mat and Alex officially deciding to tie the knot.
The couple first met on a dating app in 2017 and took a little time to get to know each other online before meeting face to face for food, drinks and a football game. While Mat had to sit through yet another loss from his Carlton Blues, he was certainly pleased to finally meet Alex, a keen Cats’ supporter.
Fast forward a few years and the topic of marriage had been discussed several times, although nothing was official. Then while on a weekend away in Melbourne for a Delta Goodrem concert and catch-up with friends, Mat and Alex made an impromptu visit to Cartier and found the perfect rings. The engagement was on.
The couple kept their happy news to themselves for a week while they let it sink in and thought up a clever way to announce it to family and friends. As it turned out, they unwittingly made the announcement on April Fools’ Day, which had everyone wondering if it was all an elaborate hoax.
Mat was placed in charge of planning the wedding as he works in events and marketing. The couple were initially divided on whether to have a big wedding or small – so they met in the middle. The ceremony was an intimate gathering of 14 people at Nicol’s Paddock in Waurn Ponds on Friday, followed by lunch. The couple’s two Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, Bentley and Monty, stood by their side for the ceremony and Mat honoured his Scottish heritage by wearing the Ferguson family tartan.
On Saturday night 150 people gathered at The Federal in North Geelong for an elegant, black-tie celebration.
Mat’s most memorable moment was the couple’s first dance. It had been his idea to take dance lessons in the lead up to the wedding and he assumed he would be the better dancer. However, Alex danced rings around him. On the day though Mat remembers it being just the two of them sharing the moment, laughing and talking, and knocking the steps out of the park to I’m with You by Vance Joy.
Alex recalls the overwhelming feeling of love from the family and friends that shared in the celebrations. They had all played a part in the journey contributing to the relationship in different ways and their happiness could be felt throughout the event.
Some advice from Mat and Alex to newly engaged couples – don’t get hung up on the small things. Nothing ever runs perfectly to plan but guests come to celebrate the happy couple and won’t notice anything else. Simply enjoy the day.
